  Introduction:

Continuing with our reviews of Digital, Portable MP3 players, today we are looking at Best Data's Cabo MP3 player. The reason for such a hefty price is because of its built in, high-speed 64MB of flash memory.  It is around the same price as other 64MB MP3 players on the market, such as Creative Labs Nomad.

Why are companies producing MP3 players?  Simply because MP3 compression has become so popular and its use has become widespread globally.  Here is a brief description of MP3 compression if you haven't heard much about it:  MP3 (MPEG Layer 3) compression is one of the best compression algorithms around which allows us to reduce the size of digital audio files to a small enough size to store many of them conveniently and listen to them with very little loss of quality.  Most people, will not even be able to tell the difference between a CD and an MP3 file, but the difference in file size is huge.  A typical full length song in .wav format can take from 40 to 60 MB where as the same MP3 file will be under 5MB.   MP3's have very little drawbacks; they are small, sound great and are relatively easy to find on the net.  In fact the only drawback is the lack of portability.  You don't always want to be listening to your favorite music in front of your computer, do you?  With the advent of these portable players, you won't have to.

Lets face it, these specs are pretty amazing.  Obviously, this is one of the better players on the market.  With a maximum of 96MB of storage space, you can fit quite a bit of audio on this player.  The 1.3 Mbps file transfer rate is what I like best about this player.  If you read our review of the Pine D'music, you will have noticed how slow it was in downloading MP3's to the player.  Indeed this players wipes the floor with speed, as you'll see on the next page.  Here is a picture of the front and back of the player with all the controls labeled:

As you can gather from the picture, the player has a lock/hold switch which allows you to lock all the buttons when a song is playing so that you don't accidentally press stop or fast forward.  When the player is off and you put it on lock, the player will not turn on so you will not accidentally waste battery power.  Best Data also provided a sliding door which protects the data port from dust and/or damage.  Excellent extra features, lets move on and examine the software, file transmission times and sound quality...
