ASUS V6600 GeForce Review  9:44 PM EST  - Email Us
The Guru 3D has posted their review of ASUS' AGP-V6600 32MB GeForce 256 card.  Here is a bit from the review:

Before you all start sending me an e-mail on whether or not you should upgrade to the v6600 I'll tell you this. If you have a good 3D card like TNT-2, Matrox G400(MAX) or Voodoo3 then you should wait a bit longer. You should at least wait until the price drops and games have better support for T&L. At that time you might want to consider this card. If you are the owner of cards like Matrox Millennium G200, Voodoo 1, Voodoo Rush, Voodoo 2, Banshee, TNT, Riva 128 and other comparable card then you probably should run to the store and get one of those babies. (Make sure that you have an AGP slot first).

Voodoo4/5 Updates & Info  12:36 PM EST  - Email Us
The Reverned Pulpit has been keeping on top of things as far as answering peoples questions when it comes to 3dfx's recently announced Voodoo4 and 5 cards.  Here is the latest update:

Okay, I think people are confused with regards to the ability of the multiple chip boards (Voodoo5 5000PCI/Voodoo5 5500AGP/Voodoo5 6000AGP) to run in "SLI" mode plus FSAA at the same time. You cannot run both at the same time (i.e. SLI + FSAA) for the 2-chip boards (Voodoo5 5000PCI/5500AGP) but can for the 4-chip board (Voodoo5 6000AGP).

Read the full explanation here (in the pop-up window).  There is also a lot of other information that you may not have known.

Aureal SQ2500 PCI Sound Card  12:31 PM EST  - Email Us
Exxtreme 3D has posted a review of Aureal's SQ2500 Vortex2 based audio card.  This card is extremely attractive and is probably the best Vortex2 board there currently is, but when you see the specs for the SQ3500, it makes you want to wait for that instead.

18 Nanometer Gate Developed  12:25 PM EST  - Email Us
According to this article, over at MSNBC News, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley has developed an 18 nanometer transitor (about 100 atoms in length) and 10 times smaller than current transistors used in the industry.  The article states that chips can potentially hold 400 times the gates while still being the same size as today's chips.  Very interesting stuff!

Sound Blaster Live! 1024 Review  8:33 AM EST  - Email Us
3DSoundSurge has posted a review of Creative Lab's Sound Blaster Live! 1024.  Same card as the Platinum but without the bundle.  Here is a bit from the review:

So far this fall we have looked at both the Americas version and European version of Creative Labs' flagship Live! Platinum line. But what if you don't need at that connectivity and those music applications and want to save some money? With that in mind we take a look at the Sound Blaster Live! Player 1024 which is targeted at the gamer and DVD enthusiast at a very reasonable price. The card itself is the same as the Live! Platimum line and while the Live!Player 1024 software bundle is not as impressive as the the Platinum's it still includes a lot of useful applications developed by Creative and some third party applications, the most notable being full versions of the excellent EAX supporting game, Aliens versus Predator, and the excellent software DVD player, WinDVD.

We got our hands on a dual Coppermine P3 733 (engineering samples) system with PC800 Rambus memory and an 840 motherboard. Check the ID pics. Read on to find out more about what's new with Coppermine and how the dual system performed in our benchmarks.

Creative 3D Blaster Annihilator  3:35 PM EST  - Email Us
While on the topic of SE, I noticed that they've also posted a review of Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator GeForce card (couldn't fit that into the header :).  Here is a bit from the review about image quality:

The image quality of any GeForce 256 is superior to that of the TNT2 in a few significant respects. True tri-linear filtering has been added to take the place of dithering along with per pixel mip-mapping instead of per triangle. Other than those specific details the image quality is very similar to that of the TNT2, in other words, excellent.

Sennheiser Surrounder Review  3:26 PM EST  - Email Us

Act Labs PC Gun System Review  3:23 PM EST  - Email Us
The Tech Zone has posted a review of Act Labs PC Gun system.  This two piece, extremely attractive looking set of guns seems like it can add a whole lot to gameplay as soon as more games support it.  Here is an interesting bit from the review:

For any game you need direction, the handheld controller is an excellent way to achieve this. With its silver coating and symmetrical design, the handle doesn’t just look good it also feels good. There was one draw back to the controller; the thumb control stick didn’t offer enough resistance to my liking (it tends to be too loose). The controller offers two buttons in the front, there a little firm but respond well. Like any scroll mouse, once you press down on the thumb controller there was a hidden third button, very handy when playing Quake II.

Logitech Extreme Digital 3D Joystick  11:42 AM EST  - Email Us
Thresh's Firing Squad has posted a review of Logitech's Extreme Digital 3D Joystick.  This joystick actually looks very good, here is a bit from the review:

Among the newest entries to the Wingman line of gaming controllers is the "Wingman Extreme Digital 3D Joystick" (which will be referred to as the ED3D for the rest of the review). The feature set and price of the ED3D places it right into the mid-range of joysticks. This means that this kind of joystick is going to appeal to the broadest spectrum of gamers. It's not fancy enough to satisfy the super hardcore flight sim player, but at the same time it's got enough features to play most action games like Descent 3, Freespace, Mechwarrior 3, etc. It's also a lot more feature packed and sturdy than a bargain stick.

NVIDIA and AMD worked cooperatively to address this issue and offer the following solution. NVIDIA's reference driver, build #3.62, detects this core logic chip set and optimizes system settings to correct this issue. This driver is available below.

  3dfx Voodoo3 3000 PCI Review  11:18 AM EST  - Email Us
Sharky Extreme has posted their review of 3dfx's Voodoo3 3000 PCI card.  If you're sporting an old motherboard without an AGP slot and don't plan on upgrading your motherboard anytime soon, this card will give you maximum 3D performance.  However, I'd rather spend the money on the 2000 PCI as you can probably overclock it to 166MHz but it probably won't make much of a difference because your CPU will be the limiting factor.

Diamond Viper II (Sav2000) Reviews  9:10 AM EST  - Email Us
This controversy over no T&L support on the Savage2000 is making for a lot of debate recently.  Some people are getting reports that S3 says T&L was dropped and only supported in software and others are getting reports that S3 is saying it does support T&L but the drivers to support it won't be available for a while.  I don't know what to make of it, but in any case, check out these two great reviews to see how the card really performs:

Site Updates  9:50 PM EST  - Email Us
The new server is running great, isn't it?  Cash over at Fresh3D is telling me that the server load usually hovers around 0% .. awesome stuff!  Anyway, I got all excited and made some updates to our site too.  First of all you'll noticed that we've changed the poll question and are now using a new (and better integrated script).  Thanks to everyone who voted on the last one, it seems that 61% of you (including me) want an Athlon for their next system upgrade.  By the way, if you have any ideas for polls mail it to us!  Secondly, I've updated the script on the Hardware Forum.  It now has a top 10 posters page and some bug fixes.  And finally, I updated the search engine on the Archive page, which now runs a bit faster and looks better too.

Sharky Extreme's Private Eye 5  8:31 AM EST  - Email Us
Sharky Extreme has posted their latest issue of their Private Eye article.  In this issue they talk about some of the interesting things at Comdex and more interestingly, more information on Microsoft's X-Box.  Check out this bit:

Microsoft should be looking at the bottom end of the CPU scale in terms of price (how else are they to keep the unit at $299?). Thus we think that the lowest possible speed 'bin' will be sought after, whether that be from Intel or AMD. Just like last time, if we had to bet on it and based on a few more conversations at Comdex, we'd predict the CPU as being an AMD K6-2/3E (Microsoft seems to be leaning more towards AMD than Intel at this time). This low-cost, .18micron solution would be what's required when coupled with a graphics subsystem capable of some 2 Gigapixels per second (yes you read that right). We've heard that Microsoft wants a performance level that's even greater than the just announced Voodoo5 6000's paper specs of 1.3 Gigapixels/second.

ASUS V6600 GeForce Review  6:15 PM EST  - Email Us
Dan's Data has posted a review of ASUS's AGP-V6600 GeForce 256 card.  Here is what Dan had to say about the GeForce 256:

If you've got a decent 3D card at the moment (a TNT or TNT2, or a Voodoo 3, for instance) and you're considering upgrading, I recommend you hold off until the games catch up with the hardware. If you've got a graphics card with lousy-to-no 3D capability, though, a GeForce bought today will not fall far behind the pack for quite a while. It's not the greatest of bargains, but neither is it ludicrously expensive.
