Kingmax (KTI) TinyBGA PC133 SDRAM Review   4:06 PM EST   Email Us!
The Tech Zone has posted a review of Kingmax's (aka KTI) TinyBGA PC133 SDRAM.  This bit explains it all:

Who says size is everything or bigger is better?  When I first looked at this SDRAM I was absolutely awestruck by its appearance.  It was smaller than any other SDRAM I’ve encountered in every conceivable way.  The thickness of the double-sided 128 meg DIMM seemed to be thinner than my single-sided 64 meg stick of Samsung PC100.  And even more astonishing is the fact that this stick of Kingmax stood at a height that was 60% that of my Samsung.  Now that’s definitely impressive!  But, I had my skepticism… There had to be some sort of performance compromise for that decrease in size.  Ahhh… But I was wrong.  Read on… This memory will make a believer out of you, too!

A Simple TNT2 Fan   4:04 PM EST   Email Us!
Overclocker Australia has posted an article on how to make use of an old Celeron or Socket7/370 fan for your TNT2 or TNT2 Ultra.  I really hate those cheap HSF's they put on.  I removed the fan from my Elsa ERAZOR X2 and added a much larger 40mm fan.

Celeron 400 @600MHz   4:24 PM EST   Email Us!
JP over at Hexus.com has posted an interesting article on his journey of trying to get a Celeron 400 to run at 600MHz stably.  I've been through the exact same thing. His remedy was to get a board with the Socket-370 straight on it (no Slocket) and to up the voltage quite high. Mine ran quite stable until I tried to decompress a large zip file and then I would get CRC errors. Maybe I'll give it another try someday.

First Creative Labs GeForce 2 Review   6:57 PM EST   Email Us!
T-Break is the first site to post a review of Creative Labs 3D Blaster GeForce 2 card.  Wondering what it has and how it performed?  Then head over and give it a read.  Here is a bit from the review:

The 3D Blaster GeForce2 GTS reminds me a lot of the original GeForce 256. It was the fastest chip when it came out, but showed its excellence at higher resolutions. The drivers were not matured, the price-tag was heavy and Creative didn't bundle it with much software or hoo-haa like TV Out. Similarly, there's no denying that the GeForce 2 GTS is the fastest Graphics chip for gamers today. Again, it really starts showing its powers at higher resolutions, which by today's standards are of 1280x1024x32 or higher. But tell me, how many people actually play games at that resolution? I don't. I usually play at 1024x768x32, or occasionally at 1152x864x32. I doubt if I even switch my desktop above 1152x864 except for benchmarking.

Impact of Intel's MTH Problems   11:21 AM EST   Email Us!
Tom's Hardware Guide has written up an article on the impact of Intel's screw up with the MTH devices found on i820 boards that use SDRAM.  This is some pretty serious stuff, check it out:

We have found out which motherboard maker has sold the majority of MTH-chips. You might think that this was Intel, but while Intel delivered only 10% of the MTHs in their CC820-family motherboards, another board maker has produced and shipped far more than half of all MTH-motherboards. This highly respected, most successful and now rather doomed company is the Taiwanese motherboard maker Asus. Our informants state that the vast majority of their shipped i820-motherboards was the P3C-2000 or CUC2000 family, which comes with SDRAM support and thus with the faulty MTH chip. I guess you are able to calculate 120,000 times 5 and you get to a rather respectable number. Now Asus is supposed to either reimburse their customers or supply them with MTH-less i820 boards and RDRAM. One of the results of Intel's homemade MTH-Caminogate2 is the drop of Asus' stock price by about 10% on May 10. But this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Here is another important bit from the article:

One last thing I'd like to note as well. You might remember that there are three different flavors of RDRAM. PC800 is the fastest and by far most expensive, PC700 is medium and PC600 RDRAM is the cheapest and slowest. Please don't forget to have a look at my article "Showdown at 133 MHz FSB - Part2, The Real McCoy". In there you will find the performance difference between i820 w/MTH and PC100 SDRAM vs. i820 w/RDRAM of PC800, PC700 and PC600 specification. Don't let them give you PC600 RDRAM, because your system will then be even slower than your original configuration with PC100 SDRAM. Here's an excerpt from the article: "Once i820 is using PC700, PC600 or SDRAM with the MTH it is the slowest chipset in the comparison!"

Flexboard Review   10:12 AM EST   Email Us!
Trainwrecker has posted a review of a rather interesting keyboard called the flexboard.  Here is a bit from the review:

Typing on this bath mat is weird. There is no response in the keys, no Caps Lock or Num Lock lights. It reminds me of a Burger King cash register. You cannot strike the keys but rather you have to "tap" them. That is something that you have to develop a touch for. If you ran a service station and typed out invoices with Transmission oil on your fingers you could learn real quick. The keyboard characters are laser etched and are fade proof. But the real test here at Trainwrecker was how is the Flexboard as a gaming peripheral?

There has been a lot of confusion over the new Celeron II's.
