NVIDIA Chat Log - Interesting Info 11:01
PM EST - Email Us |
|
I noticed over at Voodoo
Extreme that Bjorn3D has posted
a chat log
between them and Jensen Huang (CEO and Co-Founder) and Mike Hara from
NVIDIA, check out this bit:
[01:50] <mK[mark]> (TTEOR): Will
nVidias products beable to rival the quality/speed of the Playstation
2 when that delivers?
[01:56] <NVIDIA> PS2 is going
to be rocking machine. I'm really excited by it. It will reset the bar
of "minimum 3D quality" for consumers worldwide. It will
also reset the bar for content developers. As a consumer, you'll see
lots of content created with tons of geometry. So, 3D processors
without geometry processing is going to be severely bottlenecked.
[01:56] <NVIDIA> w.r.t. our roadmap, I can tell you with
complete certainty that we will "crush" the PS2 in
performance and quality by next year.

L2 Cache Latency Guide
7:05 PM EST - Email Us |
|
Adrian over at Adrian's
Rojak Pot has let us know that he has posted a definitive guide
to adjusting your CPU's L2 cache latency. Here is a bit from
the article:
In this article, we will be testing all
15 different L2 cache latencies in order to determine their effect on
performance. Optimizers would be interested in just how much
performance increases from the reduction of the L2 cache latency.
Overclockers, on the other hand, would be interested to know the
degree of performance degradation when using a higher L2 cache latency
because that will help them determine if the increase in clockspeed
made possible by the higher L2 cache latency is worth the loss in L2
cache performance.

PM EST - Email Us |

Over at Voodoo
Extreme, I noticed an interesting link to this
article over at ZDNet: PCWeek
Online. The article talks about IBM's new super "Blue
Gene" supercomputer. To give you a wiff of what its about,
check out these amazing specs:
To get a grip on how powerful Blue Gene
will be, Horn and other researchers said it will be 500 times faster
than Deep Blue, 40 times faster than the aggregate sum of the world's
top supercomputers and a million times more powerful than a
traditional PC.
"It will be the first petaflop-scale
computer," Horn said, explaining that it will calculate 1
quadrillion (that's one followed by 15 zeros) instructions per second.
And bandwidth? Blue Gene will have all
the power of all the ISDN modems in the world, capable of downloading
the entire Internet in one second.

Intel Processor Interview 8:55
PM EST - Email Us |
|
Voodoo
Extreme has posted the interview
they conducted with Intel's Desktop CPU PR guy, George Alfs. Here
is a bit to get you interested:
VE: What sort of support for games
will the upcoming Itanium and PIII EB (coppermine) incorporate?
GA: See my answer above for Itanium.
Pentium(R) III processor on 0.18 micron process takes the basic
Pentium(R) III processor with its SSE support (used in MS DirectX and
many apps and games) and adds an on-die full speed 256bit-wide path
256K L2 Advanced Transfer Cache as well as increased number of buffers
(Advanced System Buffering) which allow more information to get to the
CPU faster. These improvements allow for an immediate 25% boost in
performance clock to clock over the .25 micron Pentium III processor,
as measured by CPUmark99. System level performance is significant as
well. When you add the higher MHz and SSE optimized GeForce drivers
you have a kicking game machine.

A 3D Desktop in Thin Air? 9:02
AM EST - Email Us |
|
Sounds interesting, doesn't it?
According to this
article over at PC Magazine,
a company called DMA has created a display technology which projects
images into the air and has multiple planes, so that it is actually
3D. Here is a bit from the article:
DMA has kept a low profile so far and
isn't divulging details about its technology, since patents are
pending. According to Sullivan, the Multiplanar Volumetric Display
uses not one plane of image data-as conventional displays do-but 12
planes, each depicting a different depth. The end result is
essentially a stack of images floating either a few inches in front of
the display or inside the display, as if you're watching fish inside
an aquarium. The display uses an array of optical components, such as
parabolic mirrors and beam splitters to collect, focus, and project
light in space to form volumetric images. Since the images have
volume, they're measured in voxels-volume picture elements-rather than
pixels.

Recently, we took a look at iiyama's VisionMaster Pro 450. Well, if
that monitor was not large enough for you, read on as we take a look
at the 22" model of this line. Like the Pro 450, the Pro 510 also
uses Mitsubishi's DiamondTronTM CRT.
The result is breathtaking clarity, and precision of anything that is
