AMK LAN-0334 Case Review  4:11 PM EST  - Email Us
The Tech Zone has posted a review of AMK's pretty cool looking LAN-0334 Medium Tower Case built with LAN gamers/overclockers in mind, check out this tidbit:

The LAN-0334 is a 17 inch ATX case. Just the right size to bring to LAN parties. There is even an optional carrying handle! There are three 5.25" drive bays, two 3.25" drive bays and two 3.25" internal drive bays. This is one more internal drive bay than the bigger AMK-0334 case. In other words, it can hold more hard drives and it's smaller to boot! Inside the case, all the metal have rolled edges so you don't cut your fingers. Unlike the AMK-0334, the LAN-0334 doesn't have a slide out motherboard tray.

Pinnacle Systems' Studio MP10 is unquestionably the best option on the market for MPEG-1 encoding. If you want to share videos with the family, or just put together your own collection of videos, the Studio MP10 is exactly what you need. As for buying one, I saw them in Compusa for $289 (Retail) and there is always the Internet where it was as low as $214.

John Chow over at The Tech Zone has notified us that they have posted a review of Everglide's Large Attack mouse pad giving it a sweet 9.5/10.  You know, I'm really thinking of scrapping these crappy fabric mouse pads I have because the trolleys inside the mouse keep getting full of crap, that it's necessary for me to clean them every 2 weeks which is really annoying!

Act Labs Ship PC Light Gun System  8:55 AM EST  - Email Us
Act Labs has notified us that they have begun shipment of the very much anticipated PC Light Gun system.  I can't wait to try these things, here is the press release:

Richmond, BC. August 13, 1999 - ACT LABS Ltd., developers of cutting-edge gaming peripherals for the intermediate to advanced gamer, have announced that they are now shipping  their ACT LABS GS Gun SystemT. The product is available now and has a MSRP of $99.99 including bundled  software. This is the first product that  utilizes their patent-pending PC gun technology.

ACT LABS has been working extensively with software developers to ensure many games have integrated support for the GS this fall. The GS is applicable to four specific game genres; action/adventure, hunting, military simulations, and first person shooting titles. ACT LABS has teamed up with software companies in each genre for  promotional purposes and events that will launch this fall. Some of the popular games that are scheduled for GS support include Die Hard Trilogy 2T from Fox InteractiveT, Top ShotT and Cabela Sportsman's ChallengeT from Activision®, and Deer Hunter 3T developed by Sunstorm InteractiveT. ACT LABS also understands that independent developers are currently finalizing "mods" or game add-ons for use with popular first person shooter titles. The GS is currently scheduled for support in more than 20 titles and the list is growing each day.

The ACT LABS GS Gun SystemT is a complete system that has been designed to offer both single and two-player use. Following the high design standard set by their previous products, the system consists of 2 light guns that are stored in an attractive holster-style base unit. The base has a metallic finish and rubber form fitting pockets to keep the guns upright in storage. Each gun incorporates a rubber-contoured handle for additional comfort.

The third important component of the ACT LABS GS Gun SystemT is a handheld controller that can be used in conjunction with one of the guns. This device has it's own storage location at the rear of the base unit. You can "hot-swap" the guns at any time to allow for the use of the included handheld controller. The handheld controller also has a "mouse-emulation" feature that gives it additional functionality.

Set top DVD or DVD-ROM Drive?  4:32 PM EST  - Email Us
Sharky Extreme has posted a great article which attempts to help people make the decision on whether they should go the DVD-ROM direction or buy a set top DVD player.  The DVD-ROM path will cost you less, but the experience may not always be as good.  Here is a bit from the article:

Movies on a PC DVD player you say? That's crazy! Who would want to watch movies on a 17" monitor? It is easy to forget that not all PC DVD players are run off of a video card, and it's even easier to forget that TV-Out connector on your video card that you've never used. Really it all comes down to what it is you want out of your DVD purchase, and Sharky Extreme is here to help sort out the mess.

3DCool's Monitor Cooler Review  4:25 PM EST  - Email Us
Speedy3D has posted a review of 3DCool.com's monitor cooler.  Your monitor is probably the hottest component of your computer and believe it or not, they do break down quite often.  I've had to RMA 3 times already and they were probably all due to heat problems like wires melting and the soldering links coming loose.

Cybex KVM SwitchView Review  4:17 PM EST  - Email Us
Anand Tech has posted a review of the Cybex KVM SwitchView.  What the heck is this thing?  Check out the intro:

The requirement for more than one computer in today's household is on the rise - more and more IT Professionals are working from home. When does the need for a KVM unit arise? Well, there are many uses for these devices, ranging from server rooms to development machines, and virtually in any scenario where you would want to control multiple machines from a single station. I, myself, run a business from home. I have a complete development studio setup from where I do all my work, and this unit already makes my life alot easier. Even with the salaries that most IT professionals make, buying multiple monitors & keyboards can get quite pricey. The solution to this is the KVM (Keyboard, Video and mouse) Switch unit.

Global WIN FDP32 vs. Alpha 7HO  4:11 PM EST  - Email Us

If you're a serious overclockers looking to get the most out of your Celeron and got the right size motherboard, the Global Win FDP32 is your best bet. I can't wait to see Global Win's answer to the Alpha P125! :-)

Diamond Stealth III S540 Xtreme  4:50 PM EST  - Email Us
Gamespot has posted a review of Diamond's Stealth III S540 Xtreme 32 MB card which is based on S3's new Savage4 Pro Xtreme chip.  Add a fan and this $100 card might be able to give you a damn good value! Check it out:

Unpacking the card revealed something else interesting: This 166MHz card ships with just a passive heat sink - no cooling fan. The heat sink got quite toasty, but nowhere near as hot as the Voodoo3/3000 heat sink. So the overall design seems a bit more efficient in terms of heat generation than the competition.

ATI All-in-Wonder 128 Review  4:25 PM EST  - Email Us
Ars Technica has posted a review of ATI's All-in-Wonder 128 card.  Here is a bit from the review:

Then again, for the graphics professional or CAD/3D designer, the ATI All-in-Wonder 128 has no contender in its price range. Its image quality is just short of spectacular, and its OpenGL and Direct3D ratings smoke a Matrox G200 six-ways-to-Sunday (700% faster at OpenGL, 250% faster at D3D). And with ATI's apparent dedication to this chipset (there are currently 7 configurations in their lineup using it), driver updates will likely ease the heavy CPU dependency. You saw testimony above - their recent OpenGL update (specifically directed at Quake 3 Test users, in fact) increases performance by 15% or so. Also, in a freakish move in this market, there are a number of 3rd-party developers offering alternative drivers. How the hell that happened, I don't know, but I like it. ATI, without embarrassment, both links to them and includes information on their support pages. This includes drivers for the BeOS and Linux!

  3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV Review  4:11 PM EST  - Email Us
Hot Hardware has posted their review of 3dfx's top-of-the-line Voodoo3 3500 TV card.  The box looks ultra cool by the way.  Here is what they thought of this baby:

From this reviewer's perspective, the Voodoo3-3500TV is the fastest 3D accelerator on the market today. It also boasts really great features on the AV side of things. These new toys can breath new life into your computer and allow you to do more than you ever had before from a Multi-Media standpoint. All in all, I highly recommend the Voodoo3-3500TV for anyone who wants the "Cadillac of Voodoo3s" with all the bells and whistles!

3dfxCool Monitor HO Review  4:20 PM EST  - Email Us
The Tech Zone has posted a review of 3dfxCool's Monitor HO (High Output) cooler.  Here is a bit from the review:

The temperature of my monitor without the cooler was 104 degrees Fahrenheit. That was much hotter than I thought it would be. With the 3dfxcool Monitor HO cooler the temperature dropped to around 84F. It has stayed around there for all times of the day for a few weeks. Not bad at all, a 20 degree F drop in temperature. The only thing is that 3dfxCOOL claims a 30F drop in temperature. In a cool environment I think this would be possible, so they are not making any unreal claims.

Actually the converter can be used to upgrade any Pentium 75~233MHz system to an AMD K6-II/333~450MHz or AMD K6-III/400~450MHz, as they're also offered separately.

Global WIN FDP32 Socket370 Cooler  5:14 PM EST  - Email Us
Planet Hardware has posted a review of Global WIN's massive FDP32 Socket 7/370 CPU cooler.  He had to do a bit of sawing to get 2 to fit on an Abit BP6 motherboard but the performance of these babies should be awesome.  The MSRP is $24.99, but you can grab them from CoolerGuys.com for 21.99.

Anand's AMD Athlon Review  5:05 PM EST  - Email Us
After yesterday's huge list of reviews, I didn't think I would post anymore.  However, Anand always does a great job on his reviews so it would be an injustice not to let people know about this review.  This AMD Athlon review is packed full of information and benchmarks of both the 600 and 650MHz Athlon vs. the P3 600 & 650 as well as a few Celeron's thrown into the mix.

Diamond Monster Sound MX25  4:31 PM EST  - Email Us
I've been waiting to see a review of this add-on board for quite a while!  Thresh's Firing Squad has posted a review of the finally available, Diamond Monster Sound MX25
"breaker" card for the MX300.  This board add a digital SP/DIF output port to the MX300, which can then be sent to a Dolby Digital decoder for a darn good DVD experience.  I agree with the Firing Squad, it's not worth the $40 USD for the card and shipping costs on top of that just for one additional function.

  Abit BE6 Slot-1 w/UDMA66 Mobo  4:31 PM EST  - Email Us

JustCooler TT-900 Cooler Review  4:12 PM EST  - Email Us
The Tech Zone has posted a review of JustCooler's TT-900 dual fan bay cooler.  Here is a bit from the review:

The design of the unit is very smart. While most drive bay coolers uses small 1.5" fans on the drive bay face, the TT-900 uses 2 big 92mm fans on 2 levels. The fans are very quite. They only give off 27 decibels of noise when operating at 2100 RPM. This is quieter than most case fans. You won't be wasting any power supply connectors by using this product because a 4 pin pass through connector powers the fans.

  ICQ 99b Alpha v3.16 Build 2562  4:05 PM EST  - Email Us
I know it's not at all hardware related, but it's just such a darn cool program and if you're not already using it, you should be!  Anyway, I noticed over at Betanews, that Mirabilis has released a new version of their popular ICQ program. Here is the info and a link to download:
