AM EST - Email Us |
|
3dfx has
released a new driver for the Voodoo3 2000 & 3000 cards. Here
is some info on them from 3DFiles.com
and a link to download:
Voodoo3 2000/3000 drivers for AGP/PCI
boards running under Windows 9x. This driver kit includes: 2D Display
driver, Glide 2.6, Glide 3.1, DirectX (Direct3D and DirectDraw) and
OpenGL(r) v1.1 ICD. These drivers support Intel, Cyrix and AMD 3DNow!
based CPU's. Despite the old date on the drivers, they are indeed new,
but not newer drivers. They simply make the OpenGL ICD used with Quake
3 into the same driver kit. If it doesn't make sense, don't worry,
just install them. :)

S3 Savage2000 Interview @AGN 8:06
PM EST - Email Us |
|
AGNHardware
has posted an interview
with S3 regarding their freshly announced Savage2000 3D chip. Here
is a tidbit:
I have to admit that the Savage 2000 is
quite an impressive sounding video chip. Is the main technology of the
chip based upon the Savage 3 and the Savage 4, or have you rebuilt it
from the ground up to offer an impressive increase over past
technology?
This is a completely new graphics
platform, beyond Savage 3D and Savage 4. So that means it has been
pretty much completely redesigned. Although we did use some of the
better aspects of the architecture to some of the previous
generations, we like to apply them toward the next generation. A lot
of the good things about the Savage 4 architecture such as its very
efficient memory utilization, 32 bit rendering, image quality, S3TC
textures and more have been put into this architecture.

S3 Savage2000 (GX4) Preview 8:51
AM EST - Email Us |
|
Thresh's
Firing Squad has posted a preview
of S3's upcoming 3D chip, the Savage2000 (codenamed GX4). Check out this
bit:
We're most interested in the 2
multi-textured pixels per clock, the onboard T&L, and the DVD
options. Current 3D accelerators such as the Voodoo 3 and TNT2 only do
a single multi-textured pixel per clock. The Savage2000's 2
multi-textured pixels per clock virtually doubles the performance of
the Voodoo 3 and TNT2, the Savage2000 can also do single-pass quad
texturing for a single pixel.

Nvidia Riva TNT2 Pro Info 10:57
AM EST - Email Us |

RIVA
Station has some interesting info on the TNT2 Pro chip and the
ERAZOR III Pro card, check it out:
The german magacine c´t published some
details about TNT2/Pro in its News,
so I can give you some information about that chip (without getting
into trouble :-)). The TNT2/Pro is manufactured in 0.22 Micron. This
allows less voltage and results in less heat and higher clockrates.
The clockspeed of TNT2/Pro cards is 143MHz Core- and 166MHz Memclock.
The new Erazor III Pro does also run at that clockspeed. The E3 Pro is
close to Ultra speed - you can get it to Ultra speed with a bit
overclocking without problems. If there will be 0.22 Micron Ultra
chips is unknown yet.

which tools are the most useful when working on computers, check out the
intro:
You don’t need much in the way of
tools to work on computers - a Phillips head screwdriver is all
that’s called for in most hardware installation jobs. But for more
involved operations, like adding a new cooling fan or repairing a
power cable pinched in the case, you’ll need some extra gear.
Fortunately, most of the extra tools for working on computers come in
well under $25 (Australian dollars).

Overclocking The AMD Athlon CPU 4:49
PM EST - Email Us |
|
Tom's
Hardware Guide has been pumping out Athlon
articles like crazy! The latest article
takes a look at overclocking the chip and how he was able to do it
without that special device... it looks quite complicated actually,
especially without the right equipment. Here is a funny bit from
the article:
Don't do it if you feel insecure in any
way! Don't do it altogether as long as you haven't got a damn good
reason to increase the performance of your Athlon. In most cases
Athlon performs better than anything else anyway. Don't do it just for
fun and don't think that it increases your pecker-size in any way.
Even the crazy die-hard overclockers should have learned that by now.
You ARE risking the life of your CPU! Don't ever forget that!

You must be wondering what the heck is going
on here, since when did Creative Labs start making PC's? Well it
surprised me too! Head over to the

of of Creative Labs Blaster PC. Here is a bit to get you excited:
The volume control isn't the only thing
on the front of the Blaster PC. A few manufacturers have relocated
some of the ports to the front of their computers but Creative has
gone overkill. Behind a sliding panel at the bottom of the comp, you
can access USB, audio input/output, joystick, MIDI, SPDIF video and
optical ports. There is even accommodations for FireWire! Not enough
you say? How about a built in FM tuner? Nothing like listening to your
favorite FM station while surfing the net. :-)

The ELSA ERAZOR III is not a bad card,
but at the same time is not the best card in the TNT2 arena. On one
hand ELSA includes a great manual, excellent drivers and plenty of
demos to get you going. On the other hand the slower memory and lack
of a fan keep you from getting the higher performance that some of the
other TNT2 based cards are capable of.

Will Intel Kill AMD? 4:45
PM EST - Email Us |
|
Over at Voodoo
eXtreme, I noticed an interesting link to an article
on ZDNet UK which analyzes the
current situation between Intel and AMD and the CPU price war.
Here is a bit from the article:
Despite a brave fight back against the
mighty Intel, culminating in the launch of its much acclaimed Athlon
processor range, AMD could be readying its white flag following
Monday's massive price cuts to Intel's Pentium II and III low-end
processor range.
AMD is coming off the back of three
disastrous financial quarters, culminating in losses of $163m (£101m)
in Q2 this
year. The speedy 650MHz Athlon chips have been launched in an
attempt to stop the rot.
David Burman, senior analyst for the
Butler Group, like many industry observers, acknowledges the current
speed advantage AMD is reaping with the Athlon chipset. "We
believe that despite Intel's massive discounts at 500, 550 and 450MHz,
it's 600MHz Pentium III chips would still appear to be slightly more
expensive than the latest AMD 650MHZ [Athlon] chips. Intel appears to
be gambling that consumers will take a slightly slower speed chip at a
reduced price.

Gigabyte GA-660 TNT2 Review 4:15
PM EST - Email Us |
|
3DAlpha
has posted their review
of Gigabyte's highly acclaimed GA-660 32MB TNT2 card. With the
turbo jumper onboard, you can run this card at 175MHz core and 190 MHz
memory frequency without any software; and from what I've heard, it runs
pretty stable too probably due to the fact that it has a heatsink on
each side of card!

Skywell Magic TNT2 @HardOCP 4:46
PM EST - Email Us |
|
HardOCP
has posted their review
of Skywell's Magic TNT2 32MB card. In the process, they converted
the thing into a UFO! Head over and see what I mean. The
strange thing about their card, is that they were no able to overclock
it very much even with all the heatsinks. The card we got from
Skywell overclocked beautifully, in fact its been running at 160/175 for
the past month, so that is a bit strange. Anyway, check out our
review here.
